There's been lots of talk of King Cake on the blog lately and why not! After all - it's Carnival Time! That glorious time of year when we get to stuff our collective faces with succulent cinnamon pastry goodness.
I'm guessing most of you know exactly what King Cake is but for my "out-of-town" friends, here's an explanation.
The History of King Cakes
The king cake is as rich in history as it is in flavor. Since the 1800s, New Orleanians have celebrated the beginning of the Carnival Season with a "King's Cake" on Twelfth Night. A small plastic baby is inserted in the cake, and the reveler who finds it is said to have good fortune for the year. The recipient then continues the festivities by having another party and providing a King Cake.
I've had my fair share of king cake in my lifetime. Heck this year I've already tried seven different varieties, but I've never had one quite like this.
For one - it's the most beautiful king cake that I've ever laid eyes on. Honestly, I wouldn't expect anything less than from Sucré since literally ALL of their pastries are exquisite.
Also Sucré's version is a braided, buttery dough (much like a croissant - as opposed to the more traditional cinnamon-roll like dough) sweetened with cinnamon and sugar and filled with a whipped cream cheese filling.
How did it taste? After following the recommendation of warming in the microwave for 10 seconds per slice, I found that it was melt-in-your-mouth delicious with just enough sweetness.
